各種センサーで生体情報を測定して無線で収集することに向けた、いわば「人体無線網（BAN：Body Area Network）」が必要になる＊1）。

　すでに先駆けとなる、BANの適用例が現われてきた。例えば、利用者に情報を提供してリハビリテーションやヘルスケアに生かすというサービスを始めた企業があるほか、インターネットを介して情報提供するサービスを事業化する動きがある。このような動きは個々の企業にとどまらない。IEEE（米国電気電子学会）の標準化組織では、BANに向けた国際標準規格「IEEE 802.15.6」の策定作業が着実に進んでいる。その作業部会で規格策定を主導する河野隆二氏＊2）は、「（規格策定およびBAN実用化への取り組みが）今、非常に盛り上がっていることを、ひしひしと感じている」と力強く語る。
